This is the Mossmorran Ethylene plant near Cowdenbeath. It process gas piped from the North sea into ethylene (ethene) which is an important starting chemical of the petrochemical industry. It is used to make many things, most obviously polythene.

The ethylene produced is pipped to Braefoot Bay gas terminal near Dalgety Bay ( see other photos ) where it is loaded onto Gas tankers for shippment worldwide.

When the flare off is burning brightly, the light in the sky can be seen for miles.
