St Magnus Cathedral dominates the centre of Kirkwall with its red Orkney sandstone. Contruction started in 1137 under Earl Rognvald, the nephew of the Martyred Earl Magnus.

The cathedral also contains the ships bell from the Royal Oak and a book containing the names of the 833 men who died when it was sunk in Scapa Flow during WWII.
